We’re just leaving Stratford. I’ll post again when we get to Derry Road
It’s been a busy time in Fairleyville
We are currently working on:
– math strategies for adding and subtracting three and four digit numbers
– comprehension strategies for reading non-fiction paragraphs
– editing written work using COPS (capitals, ‘oops’, punctuation and spelling)
– our second personal memoirs in writing
This week it is:
– PICTURE DAY on Monday!
Open House is on Thursday night. Mlle Gillingham and I are looking forward to meeting you all.
The students are excited about showing off their classrooms and their work.
See you on Thursday!
The fall weather looks like it’s finally arrived!
Here is what we are up to in “Fairleyville”
Language – Both classes are enjoying novels that I’m reading aloud to them. The grade 5s are listening to “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” in preparation for our class trip later in October to Stratford (more about that later). The grade 4s are enjoying “Dogs Don’t Tell Jokes”.
In writing both classes are working on personal narratives, following the plan-draft-edit-share cycle.
Math – We did a review the last few weeks of number patterns as well as an assessment of their number facts. Beginning Monday we will turn our attention to place value and a review of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division strategies. You can help at home by using ‘real-life’ word problems with your children: (eg. “If we need to buy one binder for each person in our family and they cost $3.99 how much will we need to spend?”)
Coming Up – The week ahead is a busy one! Tuesday is our field trip to the Water Festival at Kelso Conservation Area, Thursday afternoon is our Terry Fox Run and Friday is the cross-country meet. As well, we will be starting the DRA reading assessment for grade 5s. (Grade 4s will begin that after Thanksgiving.)
Remember to please let me know iif you have any questions or concerns!
We had a great first week together. I think we’re off to a great start. Our goal is to be a class of students who THINK….
Our class expectations are:
T – try
H – help others
I – take initiative
N – ask yourself: “Is it necessary?”
K – be kind
and en francais – the same thing (more or less!)
P – positif
E – essayer
N – necessaire?
S – servir
E – ensemble
R – respecter
Visit the “What’s New” tab regularly. Here is where I will post class information and details about the subjects we are studying in class.
I’m excited for a new school year to begin – I hope you are too!
See you on WEDNESDAY September 7th!
